How to use these lists

Read them for the shape of a name, not to pick one off the page. Almost nobody takes a name straight from a list; what happens is that a name three items down reminds you of something, and that is the one that ends up on the boat. Skim quickly and note what makes you stop.

Where each list comes from

The eight lists are curated rather than generated: no algorithm bolting words together, no filler to reach a round number. Names that read poorly on a transom, that are hard to say on the radio, or that repeat something already on every second boat in the marina were left out.

Then check it in steel, not in a browser font

A name looks different cut in 316 stainless than it does as grey text on a screen, and the typeface changes the finished width more than the letter height does. That is why every name here can be opened in the generator to be seen in the face you are considering, and taken from there into the design tool to be measured against your own transom — before anything is cut.
